A concussion cut short Michael Vick's NFL return to Atlanta on Sunday. Now the Philadelphia Eagles might be without their starting quarterback for a while.Vick was spun hard into Eagles blocker Todd Herremans by an onrushing Atlanta defender in the third quarter of Philadelphia's 35-31 loss to the Falcons, Vick's club before he went to prison for his role in a dogfight ring.
Vick spat blood as he staggered off the field and was later taken to the locker room, unable to play the final quarter as reserve Mike Kafka took over.
Eagles coach Andy Reid adopted a matter-of-fact attitude about Vick's absence, even with Vince Young, his primary backup, out with a hamstring injury.
"If he's injured, he's injured and we move on," Reid said. "I know he wants to play. I've talked to him at length. I talked to him after the game and he remembered everything, recalled everything."
That does not satisfy new NFL rules regarding concussions. To do that, Vick will need an MRI exam that should come by Tuesday as well as other impact testing before he can practice ahead of the New York Giants' visit Sunday.
Eagles trainer Rick Burkholder said there was no timetable for Vick's testing but said, "I'm not going to be back here tomorrow and tell you that's he's cleared."
Burkholder described Vick as "absolutely fine" on the airplane fight back to Philadelphia after the game and added, "Rest is one of the most vital things we can give him."
Vick, who signed a $100 million six-year deal last month, had mixed results in his return as a start to face his former club. He completed 19-of-28 passes for 242 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He ran six times for 25 yards but also lost fumbles twice.
